Natural Gas Surges 2.62% as Early Winter Demand Rattles Supply Forecasts

Natural gas jumped to $3.25/MMBtu on October 13, leading all commodity moves as colder-than-expected forecasts for western Canada and the U.S. Midwest tightened the near-term supply outlook heading into injection season.

Key Takeaways
  • Natural gas surged 2.62% to $3.25/MMBtu on October 13, making it the day’s biggest commodity mover by a wide margin.
  • Colder-than-expected 6–10 day forecasts for Alberta and the U.S. Midwest tightened storage expectations, with AECO cash rising ~18% to CAD $3.98/GJ.
  • Peyto (TSX: PEY) led TSX gas producers with a 4.2% gain; Tourmaline (TOU) and ARC Resources (ARX) also rose sharply on AECO exposure.
  • TD Cowen targets Tourmaline at CAD $85, RBC targets ARC at CAD $33, and Stifel GMP upgraded Peyto to Buy with a CAD $21 target.

Natural gas was the standout commodity mover on Tuesday, climbing 2.62% to $3.25/MMBtu — the sharpest single-session gain across major commodity markets on October 13, 2026. The move easily outpaced copper’s modest 0.43% rise and WTI crude’s 0.45% gain, while gold slipped 0.18% to $4,183.20/oz and silver shed 1.05% to $59.51/oz. The natural gas rally was driven by a confluence of weather and supply data that caught traders leaning the wrong way.

The Driver: Cold Snap Forecasts Upend Injection Season Math

The U.S. National Weather Service and the Meteorological Service of Canada both issued updated 6–10 day outlooks overnight, flagging below-normal temperatures across the Alberta foothills, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and the U.S. Midwest through late October. That revision slashed market expectations for end-of-season storage builds. The EIA’s most recent weekly storage report, released last Thursday, already showed a 62 Bcf injection — trailing the five-year average of 79 Bcf for the same week. With heating demand arriving weeks ahead of schedule, traders quickly repriced the winter strip higher.

Adding fuel to the move, pipeline maintenance curtailments on the NGTL system in Alberta reduced westbound flows by an estimated 400 MMcf/d through mid-week, further tightening AECO spot pricing. AECO cash traded near CAD $3.98/GJ by midday Tuesday, up roughly 18% from last Friday’s close — a significant bounce for a benchmark that spent much of the summer in the CAD $2.50–$3.00 range.

TSX-Listed Names in Focus

Canadian natural gas producers with heavy WCSB exposure were among the strongest performers on the TSX by midday. ARC Resources (TSX: ARX) gained 3.1% to $28.74, reflecting the company’s substantial Montney natural gas weighting and its direct exposure to AECO pricing. Tourmaline Oil (TSX: TOU), Canada’s largest natural gas producer, added 2.7% to $71.40 — translating to a market cap gain of roughly $540 million CAD in a single session. Peyto Exploration & Development (TSX: PEY), a pure-play Deep Basin gas producer, jumped 4.2% to $17.83, making it one of the top percentage gainers on the TSX this morning. Peyto’s high operational leverage to AECO means even modest price moves have an outsized impact on cash flow per share.

Analyst Price Targets and Recent Research

The rally is arriving just as several Bay Street desks were already turning constructive on Canadian gas names heading into winter. Analysts at TD Cowen reiterated an Action List Buy on Tourmaline last week with a 12-month price target of CAD $85.00, citing the company’s low-cost Montney inventory and diversified market access through LNG Canada Phase 1. RBC Capital Markets has an Outperform rating on ARC Resources with a target of CAD $33.00, noting that every CAD $0.50/GJ increase in the AECO price adds approximately $0.28/share to annual free cash flow. Meanwhile, Stifel GMP upgraded Peyto to Buy from Hold in late September, setting a target of CAD $21.00, calling the stock “materially undervalued” relative to its gas-weighted NAV at strip pricing.

Company Ticker Price (Midday) Session Change Analyst Target
Tourmaline Oil TSX: TOU CAD $71.40 +2.7% CAD $85.00 (TD Cowen)
ARC Resources TSX: ARX CAD $28.74 +3.1% CAD $33.00 (RBC Capital)
Peyto Exploration TSX: PEY CAD $17.83 +4.2% CAD $21.00 (Stifel GMP)

The key risk to the bullish thesis remains a weather reversal. A return to above-normal temperatures in November would rapidly rebuild storage buffers and pressure AECO back toward summer lows. Traders will be watching Thursday’s EIA storage print closely — a sub-50 Bcf injection would likely add further momentum to the winter rally and provide fresh catalysts for TSX gas names into Q4 earnings season.
