Key Takeaways
  • Bitcoin surged 6.10% to US$85,369 (C$119,602) on September 21, 2026, with strong ETF inflows and whale accumulation cited as primary drivers.
  • The broader crypto market rallied in tandem, with Cardano (+10.66%) and Avalanche (+10.13%) outperforming Bitcoin on a percentage basis.
  • Canadian investors can access Bitcoin inside TFSAs and RRSPs via TSX-listed BTCC (Purpose) and EBIT (Evolve), both physically settled ETFs.
  • Key levels to monitor: US$90,000 resistance to the upside and US$80,000 as near-term support; USD/CAD at 1.4010 amplifies CAD-denominated returns.

Bitcoin (BTC) surged 6.10% in the past 24 hours to US$85,369 — equivalent to C$119,602 at the current USD/CAD rate of 1.4010 — as a broad-based rally swept through digital asset markets on September 21, 2026. Ethereum climbed 6.09% to US$2,736.71, while smaller-cap tokens like Cardano (+10.66%) and Avalanche (+10.13%) posted even sharper gains, signalling a classic risk-on rotation into higher-beta crypto assets.

What Is Driving the Move?

The dominant catalyst appears to be a significant uptick in U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF net inflows, which have accelerated over the past two trading sessions. Institutional demand flowing through regulated ETF wrappers has historically acted as a price amplifier, reducing available supply on spot exchanges while broadcasting legitimacy to macro-oriented allocators. Complementing ETF flows, on-chain analytics show a notable reduction in exchange-held BTC balances — a pattern consistent with whale accumulation, where large holders move coins into cold storage rather than positioning to sell.

Macro correlation is also working in Bitcoin’s favour. With the U.S. Federal Reserve holding rates steady and the Bank of Canada having cut its policy rate to 2.75% earlier this year, risk assets broadly have found support. A softer Canadian dollar — now at 1.4010 against the USD — paradoxically amplifies Bitcoin’s CAD-denominated returns for domestic investors, meaning today’s 6.1% USD gain translates nearly one-for-one into a C$-equivalent gain for holders.

From a post-halving supply perspective, Bitcoin’s April 2024 halving reduced the daily issuance to roughly 450 BTC per day. Over 28 months later, that supply constraint continues to tighten the float available to satisfy institutional-scale demand. Historically, the 18–30 month window following a halving has produced Bitcoin’s most powerful price appreciation phases — placing September 2026 squarely within that window.

Canadian ETF Snapshot: BTCC and EBIT

Canadian investors have direct TSX-listed access to Bitcoin through the Purpose Bitcoin ETF (BTCC) and the Evolve Bitcoin ETF (EBIT), both of which hold physical BTC in custody. Today’s price surge will be reflected in both funds’ NAVs at the close of TSX trading. BTCC, the world’s first physically settled Bitcoin ETF launched in February 2021, remains the higher-liquidity vehicle with tighter bid-ask spreads, making it the preferred choice for larger TFSA and RRSP allocations. EBIT offers a competitive management fee and has historically tracked BTC spot price closely.

Asset Price (USD) Price (CAD) 24h Change
Bitcoin (BTC) $85,369 $119,602 +6.10%
Ethereum (ETH) $2,736.71 $3,833.12 +6.09%
Solana (SOL) $116.86 $163.72 +7.87%
XRP $1.49 $2.09 +7.84%

What Canadian Retail Investors Should Watch

For TFSA and RRSP holders using BTCC or EBIT, the key near-term level to monitor is US$90,000 — a psychological resistance zone that, if broken on meaningful volume, could attract a fresh wave of momentum-driven institutional buying. On the downside, US$80,000 now acts as near-term support, having been tested and held earlier this month. A weekly close below that level would warrant reassessment of short-term positioning.

Investors should also watch the USD/CAD exchange rate. A further weakening of the loonie would mechanically inflate the CAD value of Bitcoin holdings, providing an additional tailwind — but it also means that any USD-denominated drawdown is softened only partially. Diversification across BTCC, EBIT, and traditional TSX equity remains prudent for investors who are newer to the asset class. As always, Bitcoin’s volatility demands position sizing that reflects individual risk tolerance, not just recent momentum.
